Matthew - Section B
Remember
This section starts with Jesus 'opening his mouth' to teach the people (5:1-2) and it ends with
"And it came to pass when Jesus had finished these words" (7:28).
Remember
Matthew is writing for people with a Jewish heritage and and their lives revolve around
the keeping of the Law.
He is trying to show them the emphasis Jesus placed on keeping the spirit of the law (rather than externals).
Matthew (and probably Jesus, fifty years beforehand) used an exhortatory style of speech.
He shows Jesus urging people to go beyond keeping the bare outlines of the law.
Unlike the gospel of Mark, Matthew is not relying on the names of places to break up the
text into sub-sections
However, see if his Section B can break up into sub-sections that start with an obvious
"exhortation" about keeping the spirit of the law.
Some exhortations also appear to sum up a paragraph instead.
You could have a quick go at picking out exhortations in the text as usually set out
or you could move on to some suggested sub-sections for this passage.
